Calhoun Elementary!
South Central Calhoun Elementary School is a school that has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and as a 5 Star Preschool. Our district has a long traditional of high student achievement and strong family and community support for teachers.
High-quality preschool opportunities are offered to 3 and 4 year-olds. Partnerships with Head Start, Early Childhood Iowa, and Prairie Lakes AEA provide a language-rich environment in which students learn through play. Students who are typically developing, displaying delays, or coming from economically-disadvantaged families attend together in an integrated program.
Elementary students benefit from a class size of about 20 students, 1 teacher, and 1 classroom associate. A full-day transition kindergarten program is offered for students who are not quite ready for the rigors of kindergarten. Art, music, physical health, social/emotional skills, and technology are part of the general curriculum. TAG, Title I math, Title I reading, guidance, and mental health services are also provided as needed. A wide-variety of extra-curricular activities are offered by community organizations.
Teacher retention rate is high because we provide beginning and career teachers with 1:1 mentoring and coaching as well as on-going professional development that is rigorous, relevant, and job-embedded. Teachers at SCC are part of a community of dedicated educators that collaborate for continuous improvement of teaching and learning. They are also supported by a large cadre of teacher associates and supportive administrators. Furthermore, classrooms are well-supplied and updated technology is readily available.
