Content Description:
This course provides a wide variety of media experiences with emphasis on drawing techniques as well as the elements and principles of art. The students will learn some basic techniques of drawing and design in two-dimensional and three-dimensional media. This course is designed to encouraging problem solving and creative thinking while providing the background knowledge and skills needed to advance to other art courses.
Objectives:
1.) To understand some of the technical aspects of art. 2.) To learn the basic techniques of drawing, design and painting. 3.) To prepare students for other areas of art.  4.) To begin developing a personal style in Art. 5) To learn creative thinking & problem solving techniques.

Content Description:
Students will learn basic two-dimensional drawing techniques with a variety of materials. Emphasis will be on developing drawing skills while continuing to emphasize the elements and principles of art. Students will be encouraged to begin developing a personal style and expressing ideas through drawing. Students will learn creative thinking and problem solving skills.

Content Description:
Students will develop three-dimensional works of art using the medium of clay. Handbuilding, wheel thrown and finishing techniques will be learned.

Content Description:
Students will learn color theory, basic watercolor and acrylic painting techniques to create still lifes, landscapes, and abstract paintings. Problem solving, communicating ideas, creativity and design elements and principles will be emphasized.

Content Description:
This is a continuation of Beginning Ceramics. Students will use the basic handbuilding and wheel thrown techniques to create three-dimensional artworks with clay. Emphasis will be on developing a personal style that is expressive and creative.

This is a continuation of Beginning Painting. Students will be expected to show abilities in a variety of painting media and develop a personal style that is creative, expressive and uses original ideas.

Content Description:
This course is a continuation of Beginning Drawing. Students will continue to develop their drawing skills with emphasis on creativity and personal style. A variety of materials will be explored.

 

SUBJECT: PHOTOGRAPHY
CREDIT: One Credit
COURSE LENGTH: One Semester
GRADE LEVEL: 11,12 Upperclassmen have priority.
PREREQUISITES:
Highly suggested to have taken Web Graphics (Adobe Photoshop) prior to this class

35 mm film camera and digital camera recommended

Limited to 6-8 per section

Content Description:
This course is intended to introduce the students to the Art of Photography. The basic techniques of using a camera, the history of photography, and developing black and white photographs will be covered the first nine weeks. It is best if each student brings their OWN 35mm film SLR camera to use. The second nine weeks will cover digital photography and image manipulation. It is BEST if each student brings their OWN digital camera.

 

SUBJECT: VOCAL MUSIC

CREDIT: Two Credits

COURSE LENGTH: Full Year

GRADE LEVEL: 9,10,11,12

PREREQUISITE: Middle School Choir or by Teacher Approval

Content Description:

Any student is eligible to be a member of mixed chorus which is the basic performing group for vocal music. An ability to match pitch and read music is recommended. This group performs a variety of styles, types, and periods of vocal literature and participates in the following events: 1.) Attendance required for assessment at four scheduled concerts per school year. 2.) Required attendance for assessment at State Large Group Music Festival. Students who are members of the mixed chorus also are expected to attend scheduled voice lessons weekly and extra rehearsals that may be scheduled as needed. Also available to interested members are all-state auditions, groups which sing the National Anthem at football and basketball games (group members selected based on auditions), vocal festivals, swing/jazz choir (members selected by audition), commencement singers, state solo/ensemble music festival entries and special community performances.

Objectives: 1.) To be able to sing various types, styles and periods of literature. 2.) To be a part of a successful and rewarding overall group effort. 3.) To develop and improve personal vocal skills. 4.) To learn proper voice techniques and care of the vocal instrument. 5.) To develop an understanding of and appreciation for many different types and styles of music. 6.) To be able to appreciate music as an art form that is used and exhibited every day of our lives.

 

SUBJECT: MUSIC THEORY

Content Description:

MUTH will introduce harmony in music beginning with the construction of major and minor scales, the Circle of Fifths, intervals, and triad and Dominant 7th chord construction. This will be supplemented by ear training, a music composition project, and constant connection to historically relevant repertoire.

Objectives: By the end of the course, students will read and notate music, discern intervals, scales, and modes, analyze chords and scales, and connect repertoire to the world around them. The class will cover one unit from the text each week, supplemented by musictheory.net assignments and a term music composition project. Students will be tested at the end of each unit both wirtten and aural. Daily work will be given, all assignments and tests are cumulative as knowledge carries from one concept to the next.

 

 

SUBJECT: INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year

PREREQUISITE: MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND
Content Description:
Instrumental music is designed to offer instruction and experience through a number of large and small group performances including concert band, marching band, jazz band, pep band, ensembles, solos, and lessons. Students will study musical concepts such as rhythm, articulation, tone, phrasing, intonation, balance and blend, dynamics, and terminology. Students will also learn to apply basic concepts of music theory and field/parade marching fundaments. The band will study literature representing various historical time periods including the pre-baroque, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary.

Instrumental music is a performance -oriented class. Performances which are scheduled outside of the school day are required and are a part of the instrumental music grade. All performances are scheduled on the school calendar.
