SUBJECT: INTRO TO HEALTH CARE
CREDIT: Two Credits + (2 sem hr ICCC: Course Number HSC-104)

Content Description:
The Health Occupations 1 curriculum provides students with a knowledge and vision into a variety of health occupations. Students will have a basic introduction to the health care delivery system, professionalism, legal and ethical responsibilities of the health care worker. The communication process will be introduced as well as an understanding of patients’ needs and behavior and cultured diversity. Aspects of patient care will be discussed involving safety and infection control. The class schedule will be2 periods per day.
Objectives:
1.) To provide classroom instruction and job-shadowing experiences that would enable the learner to become familiar with a variety of health care professions. 2.) To provide knowledge on health care transformation. 3.) To give the student the opportunity to explore health care occupations such as: dental services, diagnostic services, mental health services, nursing/nursing related services, ophthalmic services, rehabilitation services, health information/communication, physicians/medically related services, medical instrumentation, environmental services, animal health services, mortuary services and child care services. 4.) To understand and follow the expectations of an employer in the Health Care field. 5.) To relate job shadow experiences by writing periodic summaries utilizing proper writing and grammatical skills.

A background check for criminal history and dependent adult abuse will be completed prior to the first day of class for each student enrolled. There is a $15.00 processing fee for this requirement. (paid by student)
Content Description:
The Health Occupations II curriculum provides students with knowledge and skills needed for entry into the work force either immediately upon graduation from high school or after attaining further education. It provides a strong general foundation in the basics of health care, including the health care delivery system, ethical/legal components, and patient care skills. In addition to the course content of Health Occupations I, more in depth studies of special procedures and clinical experiences in long term and acute care facilities will be offered. The class schedule will be 2 periods per day. Successfully completing this course will enable the student to take the Nurse Assistant 75-hour Certification Exam.
Objectives: Certified Nursing Assistant
1.) To provide classroom instruction and clinical experiences that would enable the learner to become employable in the health care field. 2.) To have the student become familiar with the various health care and related occupations. 3.) To provide a basic foundation in the care of the geriatric patient with an emphasis on the 75-hour Nurse Assistant curriculum. 4.) To participate in the Health Occupations competition at Iowa Central Community College.

Content Description:
The Health Occupations III curriculum provides students the knowledge to understand medical terminology of the human body systems. The emphasis will be on recognition and functional vocabulary related to the medical science. Definitions, standards, abbreviations, pronunciation, correct spelling will be included.
Objectives:
1.) To enhance knowledge of terms used in the health care field. 2.) Demonstrate proper use of a medical dictionary. 3.) Identify meanings of common medical abbreviations. 4.) Demonstrate the ability to read, speak, write and understand the language of medicine. 5.) Describe appropriate medical terminology for each body system. 6.) Spell common medical words correctly. 7.) Identify common medical roots and combine them with the more common prefixes and suffixes into meaningful medical terms. 8.) Identify common medical and surgical procedures, utilize appropriate terminology to indicate common medical and surgical procedures. 9.) To participate in the Health Occupations competition at Iowa Central Community College.
