Prerequisites for elective language arts courses must include a strong foundation in language arts courses. The terminology Fundamental English Courses will be used in the descriptions below to represent the completion of either English I and English II OR General English I and General English II.

Content Description:
This course includes the different types of essays required at 4-year colleges. These essays include process analysis, comparison, cause and effect, definition, argument, and research. The writing workshop approach will be used to accommodate peer and teacher conferencing. Prerequisite: Five semesters of English, to include English II and American Literature or American Prose.

Content Description:
Advanced Prose is an elective course designed to provide individualized analysis of the books read. Students will individually contract for the number of pages read each quarter and will have opportunity to discuss their perspectives with the rest of the class. Computer resources will be used to enhance perspectives. Students are required to read three books from the college-bound reading list.

Content Description:
American Prose is an elective course designed to acquaint students with American fiction and nonfiction. Students read books from a list of American classics, as well as biographies and American contemporary novels. The books will be read and analyzed as a whole group.

Content Description:
This course teaches the necessary oral and written communication skills needed to be successful in the workplace. Topics include goals, first impressions, conflict resolution, communications, rules and ethics, and job search. Towards the end of the semester, the student will interview with community members. At the completion of the course, the student will have composed a resume and letter of application.

Content Description:
Creative Writing is a class that offers the student the opportunity to improve writing skills through practice and analysis. Most of the class time will be spent working in workshop format: creating, responding, and revising the writing. Specific strategies, such as dialogue, vivid verbs, similes, and extended ideas, are emphasized in each writing. Also, one day a week is allotted for large group work involving a variety of objectives to improve vocabulary and thinking skills. Assessment is based on the quality of each final draft and following the workshop format.

Content Description:
This course provides opportunities for the improvement of oral expression and written composition, including grammar with emphasis on sentence structure. Comprehension skills are developed through reading and analysis of short articles. A review of letters of application and resumes is included.

Content Description:
English IA focuses on the study of short stories, essays, poetry, and non-fiction excerpts. Students will work to improve reading and writing skills in these literature-based units. Writing workshop will be the setting for process writing practice and writing conferences. Required writing types include personal and expository composition. Students will be expected to write complete sentences using standard conventions, and they will be required to write the paragraph essay. English IA students will be required to complete all assigned work to pass the course. English IA is a prerequisite to English IB. Students who have completed English IA requirements are eligible to enroll in English IB.
This semester course focuses on the study of long literary works. These units include a modern play, a novel, and a Shakespearean unit. Students will work to improve reading and writing skills in these literature-based units. In writing workshops, students will practice new types of writing, including listing, observation, research, and comparison/contrast compositions. English IB students will be required to complete all assigned work to pass the course. English IB is a prerequisite to English IIA.

English IIA is a semester course. Students who have completed English IIA requirements will be eligible to enroll in English IIB. A research paper is also required. English IIA is a prerequisite to English IIB.

The first semester reviews the fundamentals of language arts: reading comprehension and composition. Content Description:
This course involves studying various forms of communications, including TV, radio, video, magazines, advertisements, newspapers, music and camera angles. Learning different persuasive techniques used by the media will be emphasized. The skills of summarizing, differentiating, and expressing one’s own opinion effectively will be evaluated. Censorship will be the topic of the culminating activity.

Content Description:
This course will train students in the rules of basic journalism and law of the student press. Students will periodically compose, design and produce a school newspaper column. Interviewing techniques, writing styles, layout and design principles utilizing the computer will all be included in the course. Student will also be involved with helping to develop and prepare the school yearbook for the current year. Because of the levels of writing involved, it is recommended that students possess strong writing and editing skills before taking this class. Students must successfully complete the first semester of the course in order to take the second semester.

Content Description:
All students are required to complete Speech for graduation; it is a one-semester course open to students in grades ten through twelve. The primary goals of this course are to teach students the skill of public speaking and to improve communication skills. Proper use of the voice and body in public speaking situations will be taught. Students will learn about verbal and nonverbal communication and how perception affects understanding. A variety of speeches (beginning with an icebreaker and including personal experience and informative speeches) will be given by the students throughout the semester.

Content Description:
Advanced Speech is a workshop course in which the students pick the topics for presentation, both individual and group projects. During class students will work on their projects, receiving student feedback and teacher feedback before presenting. Grades will be based on quality of performances and effort/accomplishment.
