Content Description:
All students are required to complete either general biology or biology to graduate. They may not take both.General biology is a two-semester course designed for students who do not plan to take chemistry or physics. Science inquiry will be used to explore the concepts of life and life processes. A hands-on approach will be used to explore the concepts of the cell, life processes, genetics, diversity, the six kingdoms of living things, and environmental science.

SUBJECT: BIOLOGY
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 9,10,11,12
PREREQUISITE: NONE
Content Description:
All students are required to complete either biology or general biology to graduate. They may not take both. Biology is a two-semester course. Scientific inquiry will be used to study the fundamental concepts of life and life processes. Topics covered include cell structure and function, genetics, taxonomy, an overview of the six kingdoms of organisms, and environmental science. Students are required to develop and pursue experiments throughout the year. Freshmen taking Biology must take Physical Science or Chemistry I and Physics I.

SUBJECT: Earth Science
CREDIT: One Credit
COURSE LENGTH: One Semester
GRADE LEVEL: 11,12
PREREQUISITE: Two years of high school science
Content Description:
Earth Science is an elective, one-semester course designed for junior and senior students. Scientific inquiry will be used to study geology, meteorology and astronomy and the impact of human behavior on earth processes and systems.

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY I
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 10, 11, 12
PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA I
Content Description:
Chemistry I is an elective two-semester course. It is the study of the composition of substances and the changes that substances undergo. Students will study chemical equations, chemical quantities, atomic structure, periodic table, bonding, equilibrium, thermodynamics, gas laws, and nomenclature. Basic laboratory skills will be developed and used to enrich classroom discussions.
Chemistry I is strongly recommended for all students planning to study any science or science-related field in college, including biology or medical-related fields.

SUBJECT: PHYSICS I
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 11, 12
PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA II and Chemistry I
Content Description:
This physics course is strongly recommended for college-bound students planning careers or future studies in any of the sciences. The emphasis will be on the study of kinematics, dynamics, momentum, and energy.

SUBJECT: PHYSICS II
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 11, 12
PREREQUISITE: PHYSICS I
Content Description:
This course is an extension of Physics I for those who want further study in physics. Topic s covered will include waves, light, sound, electricity, magnetism and modern physics.

SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY II
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 11, 12
PREREQUISITE: CHEMISTRY I
Content Description:
The course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. Emphasis is on chemical calculations and the mathematical formulation of principals. Laboratory work will be much more extensive and detailed that in Chemistry I.

SUBJECT: HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY I
GRADE LEVEL: 9, 10, 11, 12
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
PREREQUISITE: No prerequiites
Content Description:
The course is designed for students who are planning on going to college to study in the medical field, coaching, biology, or other fields where knowledge of the human body would be useful. This course is not recommended for students who have struggled in science or who have earned a grade below a“C” in General Biology or Biology. Study begins at the chemical and cell level and advances to the tissue, organ and organ system level, showing the interrelationships between them and how their function relates to the body as a whole. The majority of this course involves the in-depth study of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous system.
NOTE: Human Anatomy & Physiology I, II, and III MAY BE TAKEN IN ANY ORDER.

SUBJECT: HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY II
CREDIT: Two Credits
GRADE LEVEL: 10, 11, 12
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
PREREQUISITE: No prerequiites
Content Description:
The course is essential for students who are planning on careers in the medical and/or related fields of study. This course is not recommended for students who have struggled in science or who have earned a grade below a “C” in General Biology or Biology. Study progresses system by system, including the brain and spinal cord, eyes and vision, ears and hearing, the digestive system, food and nutrition, and the respiratory system.
NOTE: Human Anatomy & Physiology I, II, and III MAY BE TAKEN IN ANY ORDER.

SUBJECT: HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY III
CREDIT: Two Credits
GRADE LEVEL: 10, 11, 12
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
PREREQUISITE: No prerequiites
Content Description:
The course is essential for students who are planning on careers in the medical and/or related fields of study. This course is not recommended for students who have struggled in science or who have earned a grade below a “C” in General Biology or Biology. Study progresses system by system, including the blood and heart, the vascular system, the lymphatic system, the skin, regulation of body temperature, metabolism, the kidneys, the endocrine system, reproduction and development. NOTE: Human Anatomy & Physiology I, II, and III MAY BE TAKEN IN ANY ORDER.

SUBJECT: PHYSICAL SCIENCE
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 9
PREREQUISITE: NONE
Content Description:
All students are required to complete General Physical Science/Physical Science or Chemistry I and Physics I for graduation. Successful completion of first semester physical science or permission of the instructor is needed to enroll in the second semester of Physical Science. The course of study includes a basic introduction to physics, chemistry and Earth Science. Typical units of study include motion, force, work, machines, energy, waves, atoms, elements, compounds, chemical reactions, stars, Earth structure, and meteorology. Inquiry and problem solving skills are emphasized. Any student considering taking Chemistry in the future should take Physical Science rather than General Physical Science. Students may not take both General Physical Science and Physical Science to fulfill the science graduation requirements.

SUBJECT: GENERAL PHYSICAL SCIENCE
CREDIT: Two Credits
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 9
PREREQUISITE: Instructor Approval
Content Description:
All students are required to complete General Physical Science/Physical Science or Chemistry I and Physics I to graduate. General Physical Science is a two-semester course designed for students who do not plan to take chemistry or physics. Emphasis is placed on inquiry-based learning and the scientific method. Science inquiry will be used to explore chemistry, physics and earth science topics. Students may not take both General Physical Science and Physical Science to fulfill the science graduation requirements.

The grade level change will hopefully help direct parents and students toward this class for freshmen and not let them think they should or can go from Biology to Physical Science. It, of course, does not limit enrollment for those who come into the district at a later grade and have not had Physical Science.

SUBJECT: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
CREDIT: One Credit
COURSE LENGTH: Full Year
GRADE LEVEL: 11,12
PREREQUISITE: Two years of high school science
Content Description:
Environmental Science is an elective, one-semester course designed for junior and senior students. Scientific inquiry will be used to study different ecosystems, interactions within the ecosystems, human impact on the environment and will take time to focus on our surrounding ecosystem.
